I have never had a shopping experience that has left me so upset.
1) If an employee allows two people to go in a changing room, then you should not be angrily told by another employee later on that one of you needs to get out.
Today I took my daughter to American Eagle to buy some clothes for her 15th birthday. We picked out some things and were assigned a changing room. The young female employee allowed us both to go in the room. When my daughter had tried everything on, I stepped out and found the assistant, gave her the items that didn't work, and asked if she could find two different sizes in one of the jeans my daughter liked. After waiting in the room for 10 minutes, I decided to step out and see if she needed help. She was at the cash register checking people out, so I tried to do some looking on my own. After she was finished, she said she had gotten side-tracked, that they did not have the jeans in the size we were looking for, and she would check to see if they could be ordered. I headed back to the changing room, and my daughter asked if she could try on two pairs of jeans that we'd given back to the assistant. Also, she asked about some shorts similar to some she had already tried. Since no one was coming to ask how we were doing or if we needed anything, I again headed out. The assistant was busy helping someone else, so I did my best to find the jeans and shorts for my daughter. I brought them back to the room. As I headed in and sat down, a tall young man with blondish/reddish hair opened the door and said only one person could be in the room at one time due to fire code, and that I needed to get out. He was upset with me for bringing clothes in and angrily demanded to see how many clothes we had. I gave him the three pairs of shorts we had decided on, and told him that we had 7 items left to try, which was the appropriate number. As I was standing outside the room, I could hear my daughter getting upset because she couldn't remember which jeans were which and needed my help. I said I was sorry I couldn't be in there to help her. She said, "I am too". After finally just giving up and randomly picking two pairs of jeans, my daughter came out, and as we were heading up to check out, the assistant showed up and asked if we needed anything, making no mention of whether or not the jeans we had asked about could be ordered online. I was not upset with this young lady...yes, the service wasn't the best, but she was young, and I understand. She treated us kindly. The tall, gruff man working 4:00-5:00 PM on Tuesday, April 18th was the person who completely ruined the day for us. This was my daughter's birthday and supposed to be a fun time shopping for the two of us, but instead we were made to feel as though we were doing something wrong. My daughter broke into tears on the way home. The main points I want to make as a business owner myself are as follows:
3) Lack of consistency amongst employees is not the fault of the customer.
2) If you feel that customers should not help themselves, then you need to have staff available to help!
